Audio Research

The audio research i have undertaken includes making my own sound effects for an episode of Mr. Bean, the exam

And we did the same for a scene from the film ‘Point Break’ (1991)

For the scenes we removed all the audio and make the sound effects ourselves by watching the clips to see what sounds there are then made a spotting sheet which helped us to think of what we could use as substitutes for the sounds. We found that there were many household items that could substitute many of the sounds in the clips. For example the sound of a clock ticking could be a pencil tapping a desk, we discovered that it sounded a lot like a clock ticking so that’s what we used for the sound effect in Mr.Bean. likewise in Prison break we found that kicking a plank over sounded a lot like the sound effect used for when the characters jump over cars. The impact of the plank hitting the floor worked really well in terms of the timing and sound so we used that.

We watched the clips a lot of times to learn how the timing works and how we could make the authentic

Uni / Omni directional Microphones – what are the differences and whats the best to use

The main types of microphones are Omni / Uni-Directional Microphones, the big difference between these are the way they record audio. They both have the ability to pick audio up from diffrent directions depending on what it is you want to record and where abouts you will be recording.

Omni directional Microphones –

Omnidirectional Microphone

An omni-directional microphone records audio from all around and all directions, this means that no matter where you are from the microphone or what side you are talking into it, the mic will pick up the same audio at the same frequency. If this mic was to be put in the center of the room it would pick up all voices together no matter where everyone is at in the room. This is the biggest highlight of the use of this as it will help to get sounds that are in different places in the room to add perspective to the sound.

Uni directional Microphone –

Unidirectional Microphone

A Uni-directional microphone picks up sound from one direction. The top of the microphone very little is recorded from the sides ts only the top that picks everything up. Positives of this is the fact that it can pick up better quality at this one point. Usually, it takes a certain amount of skill and practice to use a unidirectional mic.

So, which is better to use, for me its easily the omni-directional microphone, this is because it will give us perspective for the sound effects used, if a sound is heard in the background of the shot them this mic will be very good at keeping it like that. It will add that little bit more of authentic-ness to the scene. This is going to make it that little bit better now that I’ve learnt and researched what these mics are i feel like i know more about how they work and hope they record and that is going to help me a lot in recording my sound effects.

What effects could i use and how could they help?

Audition mainly specializes in audio which means there are many different audio style effects that could help with customising and editing audio.

What are effects? – effects are basically mini programs you can add to clips, tracks in a multi track etc. There are many different effects you can achieve through audition for example Amplitude and Compression, Delay and Echo, Diagnostics, Filter and EQ, Modulation, Noise Reduction, Reverb, Speech, Stereo Imagery, Time and Pitch… There are many more to choose from, each of these categories also contain many many similar effects that do similar things within them. These effects can help with anything imaginable in editing,

They are also used for helping to save your sound, for example i had a clip that had some issue with how deep it sounded and could’ve had a higher pitch so i used the Pitch effect and played around until i got the right sound i needed, sometimes i need multiple effects to make something work or at least sound right, It also adds uniqueness and individuality to the clip if it sounds different to another, and shows the hard work put in whenever clip has some sort of effect.

Here is an example of some of the effects, and the expanded tab too reveal all the noise reduction style effects.

  1. Can you make sure that this is completed asap please, you need to have looked into at least three different topics. Make sure that you reference these as well. – remember you can add in the Point Break stuff that you worked on as some primary research too. Take out the spotting sheet here – it should be in planning
